Asking someone to stop smoking marijuana is a thorny issue for so many reasons I may not have time to list them all but the fact of the matter is that usage of marijuana can cause extreme friction between friends, family and lovers. This friction has led to merely unpleasant to sometimes horrific scenarios of break ups, ostracism, estrangement which can all too often leave the addict further in the grips of marijuana. It seems like it should be a no brainer then but let’s take a step back for a moment.

Are All Addictions The Same?

A question that has been asked by many people and I have been considering of late is are all addictions the same and if so do they all have common treatment methods?

I am a little divided in my own mind on the subject because there are a lot of similarity between any sort of addictions leading to a view that there may be a lot of very common elements that can be treated in the same way.

There are also many differences though in circumstance and in the case of drug addiction the dependence caused by addictive chemicals.

To me this means that logically we can treat the parallel issues in a similar way which primarily deals with the psychological addiction to a drug or behavior. Through introspection of the root causes of what makes people succumb to this type of compulsive behavior we can bring to light the reasons underneath the excuses and perceived need of this addiction.

From there things may vary but motivation for a better life beyond the addiction is still common but how you apply this motivation to be relevant to each type of addiction is where we start to vary in approach.

So are all addictions the same? I cannot say yes but there are enough links between every sort of addiction to be able to tie them together under a single banner so that we may learn about one addiction from others as well.

Advice on How to Quit Marijuana: Avoiding Roadblocks - Part Two

In part one we discussed how problems in our life can present what may seem like barriers that we cannot overcome and force many people to turn around and give up on their attempt to quit smoking pot. This advice on how to quit marijuana will continue on with some common and not so common examples of how former pot smokers have handled these situations.

Social obstacles
Many marijuana addicts are social smokers as well as on their own and many have a culture that is based around smoking pot and all their friends do and often their families too. Recently I heard of a girl who was stressed out because all of her close friends smoked pot but she really wanted to stop and felt that if she revealed this to her friends there would be social consequences. This may have been understandable but the stress and anxiety over losing her friends nearly broke her resolve until she was advised to look at the issue a little closer and found that the problem in her mind had become a lot bigger than it really was. By simply talking to her friends about how she felt it was best for her without judging her friends she found that most actually supported her and some decided to join her in her efforts! This was a classic example of a speed hump where the obstacle only seemed impassable and became smaller only when she had the courage to go over it.

Family Obstacle
Sometimes a social problem is not as easy to overcome however as another common problem is when your family all smoke and you cannot move out, and even worse they do NOT support your efforts to quit. A lack of freedom and space can make if very hard and if you can not change those around you and receive no support the stress can be very high and drive you back to smoking as it can be too hard not too. This is more a of a road block as you are caught between a rock and a hard place and it feels like there is no solution. In these times you have to be a little more creative and find a new way, the individual in question here fond a way forward by realizing that the roadblock that was his living conditions and addicted family was the only reason he kept smoking, not only this but a fairly abusive relationship with his father was sapping his will and all this stress and anxiety simply meant it was easier to smoke and fall into line even though he knew it was destroying his chances at a better life. The solution … to move out despite the horrendous difficulties this posed. It was a new path, a rocky path but it was this or return to the same problem. I head from this guy a few months later and now that he had quit smoking he had moved into a clean share house and while money was tight the benefits of being free was worth the hardship. This may not be possible for everyone but it shows how a rougher path can sometimes be the only way forward if you identify the crucial base problems for your continuing dependence on smoking weed.

Masking Problems
Another reason some people continue to smoke weed is that it is a way to mask another problem such as depression, anxiety or even rage and psychosis. Some feel that the effects of marijuana help them cope with these conditions but know that they need to quit, and then fall back to smoking because they feel they cannot handle whatever other problems they have. With this in mind the roadblock is the other condition they suffer from that stops them moving forward but the problem most face is that they think this other problem is unsolvable and often use it as an excuse to continue smoking because masking their problems is easier than fixing them. The answer? Treating the underlying problem of course! If this means going to therapy or buying medication designed to specifically deal with brain chemical imbalances then so be it but only by removing this roadblock will you ever move forward.

In the end all of these problems are about analysis, honesty and a motivation to do things other than just stopping smoking which is sometimes the easiest bit. By finding a path you can follow these stressful difficulties can be avoided and overcome making the road to find out how to quit marijuana that much easier, better and lasting too!

Advice On How To Quit Marijuana: Avoiding Roadblocks - Part One

How to quit marijuana can seem to some people to be a very simple question and to others an incredibly complex one. Some may think this difference of opinion simply comes from peoples varying levels of commitment to their attempts to stop smoking pot and this is somewhat correct but the circumstances people are in have some of the greatest effects on people chances of kicking their weed addiction and many of the problems I like to call roadblocks.

A roadblock is something we think we cannot pass, an insurmountable obstacle set before us that stops our attempts to move forward and appear to a marijuana user trying to quit to be a point they cannot go past so they simply turn around and head back on down the same path because that roadblock is not going anywhere. Some examples I have seen include:

  • Becoming extremely stressed when ceasing to smoke weed
  • Panic attacks
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Nightmares
  • Lack of support from friends and family
  • Social ostracism
  • … and many more!

These roadblocks I like to think fall into two categories and need different approaches.

Speed humps
A speed hump does not stop you going forward they simply slow you down, they are rough and sometimes fro a distance they look like you can’t get over them until you get closer and attempt it and realize they are not so bad! The only way to determine this is to look at the situation up close and work out can you just push on through it and it was fear of failure holding you back from giving up smoking weed not any real danger.

Barriers
A real barrier is something that you cannot get past, or if you do try you end up wrecking yourself or something else (or someone else). Often sever issues of mental health or extreme social issues can become real problems when you are trying to work out how to quit marijuana and it looks like the end. Obviously you cannot just power on here but there are other things you can do. Following the roads analogy I might be laboring a little bit we might see our path to quitting marijuana as a straight line with speed humps and sometimes a barrier ending our journey, but what if there was another path? What if we could go around that barrier or remove that barrier in a different way that just trying to drive on over it? The real secret to avoiding roadblocks is to not tackle them head on if you are going to lose but instead try to find a different path, think of new ways and approaches to the problem or sometimes realize that this roadblock might have to be removed by getting our of the metaphorical car and solving this issue first.

Help! Overcoming Weed Addiction - Does It Have To Be Difficult?

Internet addiction made an official disorder in China

China could become the first country to classify internet addiction as a clinical disorder and plans to lead the world by registering the condition with the World Health Organisation.

Beijing’s Health Ministry is expected to adopt a new manual on internet addiction next year, based on the research of Chinese psychologists. It will recognise the condition as similar to compulsive gambling or alcoholism.

“China finds itself at the forefront of this research because we were among the earliest to set up clinics . . . we had a sufficient sample of patients so that we could carry out proper scientific analysis,” Tao Ran, who set up China’s first internet addiction clinic at the Military General Hospital in Beijing, told The Times.

He said that he had reached his conclusion by studying more than 3,000 people over four years.

Many people who start on the path to quitting marijuana experience strange and vivid dreams. In the end smoking weed is about getting high to get away from something and when we become addicted to that high and you feel you NEED it then I becomes easy to blame the drug itself not the REASON you started smoking pot in the first place.

This article I named 'the reason behind the need' because I just wanted to focus on just one aspect of marijuana addiction which is the immediate reason you feel the urge and need to smoke. Many people call these cravings for pot much like a cigarette smoker craves lighting up but the difference is that nicotine creates a very strong physical craving that is also fueled by a psychological need born of a reason that you may or may not know or understand. To find, understand and explore this reason is a powerful first start in coming to terms with why you find it hard to stop smoking weed and can lay the foundation of a strong motivational drive to quit marijuana for good.

The reasons to smoke as I mentioned can be many and varied:

  • Abuse
  • Depression
  • Violence
  • Stress
  • Boredom
  • Lack of direction in life
  • and more ...
Some reasons may be worse than others but they all do the same thing; send you looking for an escape. This escape inevitably becomes a habit and a coping mechanism for these reasons behind your need to smoke pot and often that need or urge you may get is TRIGGERED by a flare up of one of these problems.

This may not be a surprise to many who know these problems in intimate detail and know they smoke pot to get away from some harsh part of their reality but the frequent problem that occurs in this instance is they blame the weed for making matters even worse (which it often can) and think that they need to quit smoking weed and this will solve their problems too!

In the end knowing these problems, reasons and triggers for your need and urges to use pot will not tell you how to quit smoking marijuana but they can help you understand and plan ahead. The politics of this drug also has had a checkered history and has often distorted how it is viewed as people of bias in the pro-marijuana and anti-marijuana camps tend to take only the bits they want to promote their own point of view.

To be free of this bias this lens is not PRO or ANTI Cannabis, it is simply anti-addiction which has less to do with the drug itself as it does have to do with the psychology of addiction.

Marijuana Addiction

To be addicted to marijuana is not an uncommon thing but the reasons for this addiction can confuse some people. The negative image of marijuana as a drug that causes harm and is associated with harder drugs such as heroin and cocaine have implied that it is as addictive as these drugs or even cigarettes whose addictive effects are now widely known.

The truth is that smoking pot is not addictive like cigarettes or cocaine or methanphedamines because the chemicals in cannabis do not leave the same physically addicting affects. There are some mild effects of withdrawal from marijuana but they are nothing like the hell that people go through trying to give up heroin. Instead marijuana addiction is much more like other psychological addictions such as gambling and alcohol addictions which stem from a want of a certain high be it the thrill of winning, the loss of inhibition and control of alcohol or the mellow high that most people experience with weed. This want can be strong it feels like a need and is the basis for being classified as an addiction, the user feels like they cannot live without it.

Causes

The causes and reasons for cannabis addiction are many and varied but a common thread is that people smoke to escape from something in their own lives, an issue or problem they cannot solve so it is easy to zone out than suffer. This can range from abuse, stress and even just boredom and lack of motivation; the reason is always there lurking and driving you back to smoking marijuana because without this driving force you would be able to quit much easier.

The first part of giving up smoking marijuana is nailing down these reasons for your addiction and being brutally honest with yourself about your habit and addiction without trying to lay the blame anywhere else.

Forget keeping some to reward yourself for staying off for so long that does not work! It is just an opportunity for a relapse!

  • Start exercising more, one of the side effects of pot is often low motivation and lethargy which can be countered with exercise. Exercising can also give you a natural high from the endorphins that are released in your body that make you feel great. Not only this but it will help with your health and respiratory system that may have been given a rough time from all that smoke inhalation.

  • Start thinking positively. This may sound like that stuff from the secret but there is no magic involved just human psychology, if you think and act with positive intent you will train your brain to stay positive and it gets positive results from people around you too. So instead of saying "I have given up smoking marijuana" say "I chose to live a healthier happier live without drugs!" a small shift can make a massive difference!

  • This is the most important one ... you must find a reason to give up smoking marijuana that is greater than your desire to smoke. It could be anything, your family, your friends, your career, your health, everyone's reasons to quit are different but they must be strong motivators because motivation is the key to overcoming addiction. Along the way you will stumble sometimes, it will be hard, you will CRAVE again and again so this motivation has to be there shining brighter than your reasons to smoke pot.

Firstly there is a difference between a goal and a motivator, achieving a goal is motivating but a motivator is a long term goal, perhaps an ongoing thing that cannot simply be reached but only improved. Everyone has a different motivator that is close to your heart and so strong is the urge to succeed at this is will be a powerful weapon against the urges to smoke. Find this and then write it down, keep it in your pocket, put it on a banner on your wall anything you can do to re-enforce that message over and over again!

Once you have this clear in your mind you can start with a plan, set small goals and do them ... do not look at the big picture yet except for your motivator just set small goals every day. For example:
  • Day One
    • 1. Throw out my stash
    • 2. Sign up for the gym
    • 3. Cook and eat a healthy meal

  • Day Two
    • 1. Remind myself of all the good things I will get from not smoking weed
    • 2. Call some friends I have not seen in a while because of my habit

  • Day Three ... etc

How to Give Up Cannabis Using NLP

Smoking cannabis despite what many people may say can be very addictive to certain personality types and people in certain situations. There is no chemical dependency associated with marijuana like there is with cigarettes or harder drugs like heroin but consistent use can create a very strong psychological addiction to the substance. How to give up cannabis therefore does not come down to riding out physical cravings like cigarettes but instead understanding your own thinking and reasoning when it comes to smoking pot.

To do this you must a certain level of self analysis which you can use to uncover the fears you have in relation to giving up cannabis which can then be eradicated by a method known as Neural Linguistic Programming or NLP for short. NLP basically means this:

* Neural - Refers to how we think, and how it interacts with our body.
* Linguistic - refers to the scientific study of language and here it is how the use of language can influence how we think and act
* Programming - Programming in this case refers to our behavioral patterns we use in our daily lives.

So when combined we have a system that through language we can train our mind to behave in different patterns and have different reactions to situations that do not follow our old programming. What does this mean for when trying to figure out how to give up cannabis?

There are many things you say and think in your daily life that have a negative effect on quitting smoking weed that have programmed you to fail and will continue to do so unless you can change the way you unconsciously react to situations. By using NLP to change your thinking you will find these negative thoughts and phrases that have caused you to fail at stopping smoking marijuana will change to positive things that will not drag you down and incite a fear or depression response in yourself.

For example, instead of saying:
I quit smoking cannabis try saying I prefer not to smoke cannabis - What is the difference?

The difference is one is a phrase you have probably used before and have had a bad experience with, it is also a negative phrase while the other is a positive phrase. Quitting sounds like you are forcing you do to something against your will but preferring not to sounds like it is your choice. Continued use of these changes will bring about a change in attitude and programming in your own mind that will help you give up cannabis.
